Merit Hosts Chinese New Year CelebrationOver 60 residents celebrated with traditional Chinese décor, food and entertainment

Merit's San Francisco team recently hosted a traditional Chinese New Year celebration, or Chinese Spring Festival, for residents at 888 7th Street. The team wanted to provide residents with a celebration to start the year off with good luck so they decorated the room in red gold paper lantern, red table clothes and symbols of the dragon figures, as Red is the color or symbol of good luck in Chinese culture.

The event was highlighted by San Francisco's Fei Tian Academy of the Arts who came to the event to promote cultural awareness and appreciation of traditional arts through their dance and performances. Residents and children were also entertained by learning how to fold a lotus flower.

Merit's team also distributed presents, which is one of the popular Chinese New Year traditions as it is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The team filled red envelopes with shiny lucky pennies and passed out chocolate coins for the children. Each resident also received a fresh Golden Gate Fortune cookie from one the of oldest handmade fortune cookie companies in San Francisco.

Merit's Team Delivers Meals to Those in Need

Merit's San Francisco Urban and East Bay teams recently volunteered for a 'Thanksgiving Meal Delivery & Block Party' in downtown San Francisco. The event was sponsored by San Francisco City Impact, an organization that is reaching out to those in need in the Tenderloin District of downtown San Francisco. Hundreds of volunteers worked for over six hours to deliver over 5,000 hot meals to low income homes, sort and deliver over 500 filled grocery bags and 500 gift bags, serve 300 meals to the homeless as well as offer services such as haircuts and medical care to those in need.

Merit's team of eleven, along with a City Impact representative, walked around the Tenderloin District and visited six pre-determined residential buildings, knocked on doors and handed out hot pre-Thanksgiving meals which consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes, bread, vegetables and dessert. Merit's group was responsible for delivering over 300 meals within a three hour period.

Merit's Team Volunteers for Boys & Girls Club

Merit's San Francisco team members Jessica Ince and Augi Yi volunteer time as Homework Helpers at the Willie Mays Boys & Girls Club at Hunters Point in San Francisco. Jessica and Augi spend time each week tutoring children in the Club's education program working with groups of 20 children ages eight to 12. During their time with the children, they focus on one age group at a time to get to know the children and build relationships and trust. Their hard work was recently reinforced by the Willie Mays Boys & Girls Club Education Director who stated that they are the most active volunteers at the center.

Jessica and Augi also worked with the community and were able to collect $200 and 30 full size pumpkins. The money was used to purchase prizes for a Halloween Carnival as well as supplies for a haunted house. The pumpkins were awarded to students who brought in their report cards and the rest were used as prizes in the carnival.

Talking Tough on Trash200 Brannan Association spearheads composting program that saves $15,000 annually

After San Francisco launched the first large-scale urban collection of food scraps for composting in the country, Merit and the board of 200 Brannan created one of the first programs in a residential complex in the city.

“We started by putting one bin out in a convenient location and then distributed free kitchen pails for food scraps and compost bags,” says 200 Brannan General Manager. "We also started a recycling and composting homeowner study group to assist with educating the residents. The program has become so popular we now have six bins and send over 4,200 pounds of waste to the composting facility each week.”

The program has helped reduce our trash output and eliminated three trash pick ups per week which has provided a $15,000 savings per year.
